SAVING BIODIVERSITY
Partnership
with National Fund ‘The Reserved Land’
Rapid development of Siberia, one of the wealthiest regions in
Russia
is directly related to its influence on the region’s nature.
Siberia’s unique territories including Altay-Sayansk uplands,
which is part of Global-200, are at risk. Global-200 includes wild or slightly
changed ecoregions of the world which comprise 90% of the planet’s biological
diversity. A federal network of natural areas of preferential protection is
located here which covers the largest conservations – Altaysky, Catunsky,
Sayano-Shushensky, Ubsunursk Pit, Khakassky, the Shushensky Bor national park
and others.
These conservation areas have unique flora and fauna among other midlatitude
regions.
UC RUSAL conceives it its duty to future generations to preserve this unique
nature.
We believe that industrial
development and social projects should not contradict with the nature’s way. A
common goal of the government, businesses and independent environment
organisations is to design a unified approach of how to maintain environmental
security, preserve nature and biological diversity amid the Russian economy’s
current growth rate.
As
part of its environmental policy, the Company initiated a partnership with The
Reserved Land, a fund that strives to preserve Russia’s national heritage – the
unique system of natural areas of preferential protection. The Fund adheres to
the UN and Russian Development Program under a long-term project called
‘Biological diversity preservation in the Russian part of the Altay-Sayansk
ecoregion’.
The Fund also provides social support to the natural area staff, arranges
environmental outreach activities, makes considerable contributions towards
creation of Russia’s environmental policy.
Since 2004, RUSAL is the Fund’s
General Partner and it finances practically every initiative of the Fund since
then.
During the partnership years, a
great number of programs have been started and implemented. Only in 2006,
RUSAL’s budget for the Fund’s programs exceeded 5,000,000 roubles (about
200,000,000 USD).
Joint projects of the Company and
the Fund include the following:
-
RUSAL-Eco
-
Park March
-
Green Watch
-
Take under your wing
-
Health Group
-
Environment Camps
-
Reporters Watch
-

-

Environment Monitoring
Environment Monitoring is a unique project for the country in
terms of its scope and scale. The purpose of the project is to preserve the
nature of the Altay-Sayansk region. It was started in 2006 and will last for a
few years. As part of the project, six natural areas of preferential protection
that form the ecoregion are thoroughly explored. The project is driven by
immense efforts of scientists, natural area specialists and NGOs.
