RUSAL SHANXI CATHODE
 On April 5th, 2006,
RUSAL purchased a cathode plant in the Linshi district of the Shanxi Province
(Northeast China). It has a territory of 156,300 square kilometres and a
population of 33.6 mln. The administrative centre is Taiyuan.
RUSAL’s cathode plant there produces cathode blocks, which are components of
the electrolytic cells required to produce aluminium. At the time of the
acquisition, the plant’s annual production capacity for cathode blocks was
10,000 tonnes. In 2007 the company expanded this production to 15,000 tonnes.
The annual demand of the RUSAL’s smelters for cathode blocks is approx. 30,000
tonnes. The acquisition and modernisation of this production facility will meet
almost 50% of the RUSAL’s current demand, which will continue to procure the
remaining 50% from suppliers located in Russia and the Ukraine.
The company plans to be completely self-sufficient regarding not only bauxites
and alumina, the main raw materials needed for production of aluminium, but
also regarding other key products such as cathodes, coke and pitch. The plant
in China will guarantee reliable supplies of cathode blocks to the company’s
production facilities, which will also reduce risks related to the dependence
on external suppliers and provide the company with control over the production
technology, thereby allowing it to improve product quality.

Technology
RUSAL Shanxi Cathode Co., Ltd produces cathode blocks for electrolytic cells.
Cathode blocks are divided into bottom and side blocks, and side blocks in turn
are subdivided into side blocks and corner blocks. The production of cathode
blocks is based on a full technology cycle, from raw materials to final
products. This cycle has three stages of press operation, bake-out, and
mechanical treatment, which create the finished product.
Environment
Shanxi Province has a well-developed coal industry with quite a large number of
carbon recycling facilities. The management of our cathode plant is sensitive
to environmental problems and always seeks efficient solutions. In its
investment initiative in 2007 with the budget of USD 322,000, RUSAL built an
electric filter at one of the cathode bake ovens. This programme aims to clean
off-gases and absorb noxious emissions.
