The Compagnie des Bauxites
de Kindia (CBK) mining complex develops one of the world’s largest bauxite
deposits. In May 2001, CBK was transferred to RUSAL for a 25-year term.
The design capacity of the complex is 3.1 mln tonnes of bauxite per annum. CBK
includes the Debele mine, a railway, a mine port and a repair centre.
Over 2 mln tonnes of bauxite are delivered to the Nikolaev alumina refinery,
while over 500,000 tonnes are supplied to other locations. CBK employs 915
people.

Kindia is a city in Guinea, lying
north east of Conakry. It has a population of 96,074. Kindia is the capital of
Kindia Prefecture and Kindia Region. Kindia grew around banana plantations
after the construction of a now-closed railway to the capital. Local
attractions include Mount Gangan and the Mariée Falls.

Technology
Bauxite is produced partly by drilling and blasting excavation and partly by
means of thin-layer technology with Wirtgen mining machines.
Development
In 2005, the company completed the building of a 3.8 km road to the Balandugu
deposit. Plans for 2007 include the purchase of a new ship-loader for the port,
the construction of a road linking the deposit to the foot of the Balai
mountain, the procurement of a new bauxite mining machine and the modernisation
of railway equipment.
Environment
Since October 2001, CBK has used thin-layer bauxite production technology.
Currently 30% of bauxite is produced using this method. This has resulted in a
considerable reduction of dust and gas emissions. The Wirtgen-2200 mining
machine allows for the bauxite to be produced without destroying the natural
landscape and to reduce the deposit development area by 10 to 15%. Earth is
excavated in even layers, and afterwards the disturbed areas are reclaimed and
vegetation is replaced. Each year, around 20 hectares of processed land is
reclaimed.
In 2008, United Company RUSAL plans to implement the ISO 14001-based
environmental management system. Projects also include the expansion of areas
to be reclaimed, the reduction of dust emissions caused by bauxite loading, and
the improvement of industrial waste collection and disposal systems.
