ALUMINIUM SMELTER PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
KRASNOYARSK ALUMINIUM SMELTER PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT
PROJECT
In 2006, as part of the RUSAL Production System, RUSAL Krasnoyarsk (the
Krasnoyarsk aluminium smelter) launched a project aimed at improvement of its
operational efficiency. Surprisingly enough, this smelter has always been
chosen by RUSAL’s Management to pilot test all proposed innovations.
The main goals of this particular project are dictated by our common strategy,
which is to improve the KPIs of our production facilities. The project will
cover the following key issues: increasing efficiency of the existing
production areas, improving the environmental performance parameters,
re-structuring of the smelter in terms of headcount and distribution of roles
and responsibilities, and elimination of redundancy.
At the project’s early stage, RUSAL teams studied the technical and financial
parameters of the smelter to understand the project’s baseline environment,
personnel, and business processes standards).
Basic principles were agreed as a task list for re-engineering or re-designing:
-
Observation
-
Analysis and planning
-
Experiment on simulators and clusters of pots
-
Implementation of the best practices and results
-
Proliferation of results across the entire smelter
The project covers the Reduction Area (potrooms), the Service Centre and Pot
Relining Shop at RUSAL Krasnoyarsk.
Further development of the RUSAL Business System will be one of the most
important and valuable results of this project. This methodology, once proven,
will be adopted by all the other plants of United Company RUSAL.
