CORPORATE MEDICAL CENTRE

The RUSAL Medical Centre was established in 2005. The first branches were set up in those Siberian cities where the key production facilities of the Company are based. After thorough preparation, the RUSAL Medical Centre will open new branches at RUSAL’s plants in Russia and overseas in the near future.

In the sphere of health care and preventive medicine, United Company RUSAL has set three major objectives to be reached by 2009:

  1. Reduce the annual rate of lost time due to illness among personnel to 600 calendar days per 100 employees.
  2. Reduce the share of employees taking frequent and long-term sick leave to 10% of the total number of the Company’s staff.
  3. Prevent situations where an employee’s chronic occupational illness is initially diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease.

RUSAL was the first large Russian employer to carry out a detailed analysis of sickness rates among its members of staff.

The Company has concentrated its efforts on health promotion and preventive care.

RUSAL Medical Centre takes the following measures:

  • Organisational and methodical planning of medical treatment and sanitary activity in Industrial Medicine
  • Maintenance of an electronic system for personal medical records
  • Operation of an ambulance service and the issue of permits to work on hazardous production sites
  • Provision of primary health care (district and therapy services)
  • Provision of specialised medical aid, with functions of early diagnostics and rehabilitation treatment.

As a result of the 2005-2006 performance, lost time due to illnesses at RUSAL’s facilities and offices dropped to 850 days per 100 employees. At the Siberian plants, the health of 820 members under medical observation significantly improved compared to previous years, with the electronic record system showing a dramatic reduction in sickness rates.

Medical support tasks of United Company RUSAL’s production process are large-scale and innovative. They require the pooling of significant material, and intellectual and information resources. That is why RUSAL actively cooperates with a wide range of renowned Russian and international scientific, research and educational institutes.

At present, the RUSAL Medical Centre is looking to certify its medical services in line with ISO-9001 (Quality Management System).

By 2008, the RUSAL Medical Centre is planning to become a participant of the Federal Health Programme and to fully comply with all the licence requirements imposed on medical centres for the treatment of occupational illnesses.
