NOVOKUZNETSK ALUMINIUM SMELTER (NkAZ)

The Novokuznetsk Aluminium Smelter was commissioned in 1943. At that time, aluminium was poured into ingots directly from holding furnace. Today, both potlines at the smelter have cutting-edge and highly efficient equipment. The smelter produced 320,000 tonnes of saleable aluminium in 2008.

The Novokuznetsk smelter employs 2,260 people.

 Geography

Founded in 1618, Novokuznetsk is located in the Kemerovo region of the Russian Federation. It lies in the Kuznetsk Valley, on the banks of the Tom river, where it meets the Aba and Kondoma rivers. Situated 308 kilometres to the south of Kemerovo, the city has an airport, a railway network and motorway connections. The city has a population of 630,000 and its main industries are ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, heavy engineering and metalworking, chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, along with coal mining and processing.

Technology

The aluminium smelter uses Soederberg technology that is specifically based on various side-worked and top-worked cells. A pilot project is currently underway to implement ‘dry’ anode technology.

Certificates

The Novokuznetsk Aluminium Smelter was certified under the ISO 9001 quality management standard. After a quality system audit, the smelter was awarded the ISO/TS 16949:2002 certificate of compliance with international industry standards, which were developed for the automotive industry. In 2007, the plant was certified under the 14001:2004 environmental management international standard. The Novokuznetsk Aluminium Smelter has also achieved OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety certification.

Development

UC RUSAL has invested into the modernisation of the potrooms, the anode plant and the cast house, as well as in the implementation of environmental projects at the smelter. In 2007, new equipment was installed in the cast house that allows for the production of homogenized roll-out slabs. The complex includes two holding furnaces, the casting machine produced by Wagstaff (US), the homogenisation furnace produced by Herwich (Austria) and a slab cutting machine. The ingot casting line produced by French Brochot has also been launched. The process of introducing automated process control systems and alumina point feeders continues.

Environment

The facility has adopted an environmental programme to run between 2007 and 2010. In 2007, scrubbers were put into operation in the sixth potroom as part of this programme. The second potroom will be also equipped with more two scrubbers in the near future. The company plans to introduce dry scrubbers in all potrooms over the long term.

Three years ago the smelter also bought a mobile environmental laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment. The laboratory allows quick and accurate analysis of components in the air in any part of the city.
