TIMAN BAUXITE
 Commercial development of
the Middle Timan Bauxite deposit started in 1997. The deposit is located 150
kilometres to the north-west of Ukhta, in an unpopulated area of the taiga.
The Middle Timan group of deposits has bauxites reserves sufficient for
producing 2 mln tonnes of alumina annually for more than 40 years.
The Middle Timan consists of Vezhaya-Vorykva, Upper Shugor and Eastern
deposits, with Vezhaya-Vorykva accounting for 57% of the area’s total reserves.
Commercial development in the region first began in 1997.
Due to the favourable mining and hydrologic conditions, 90% of the Timan
bauxites are extracted by open-cut mining.
In addition to bauxites used in alumina production, the deposit has reserves
applicable in production of abrasives and refractory materials with high
alumina content.
The deposit is connected with the federal railway (Moscow-Vorkuta), by its own
railway line, which was commissioned in 2002.
The main consumers of Timan bauxites are the Urals and Bogoslovsk aluminium
smelters.
In 2009, the output totaled 1.94 million tonnes. The production facility
employs 526 people.

Ukhta, a town in the Komi Republic, is
situated on the Ukhta river in the southern portion of the Timan mountain
range. Founded in 1929, it has a population of 96,000 people. It is 333
kilometres to the northeast of Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi Republic.
The Komi Republic has a
population of 1,123,900 and occupies 415,900 square kilometres in the far
northeast of the European part of Russia. Its main industries are fuel,
forestry, wood processing and paper production, and oil, gas, coal, oil shale
and peat extraction

Mining technology
The construction project developed for the Timan mine by VAMI institute
provides the opportunity for separate mining of Bayer-grade bauxites with a
silicon ratio of 7.5 to 8.5 and alumina content of at least 50%, as well as
sintering bauxites with a silicon ratio of around 5% and 46% alumina content.
The existing method of extracting bauxites gives the opportunity for their
application at the Urals refineries without major upgrades to existing alumina
production processes.

Environment
Construction and operation of the bauxite and alumina complex in the Komi
Republic are carried out with due consideration of the unique climatic
conditions of the region and meet the international environmental requirements,
including the strict standards of the World Bank.
The master plan and the structure of the future complex are developed on the
basis of environmentally friendly technologies. The company is committed to
using only environmentally sound equipment which produces a minimum amount of
emissions.
