Gallium

Extracting the rare earth metal gallium from red muds is a by-product of RUSAL alumina refineries. The technologies implemented at these facilities allow them to produce 99.99% and 99.999% purity metallurgical gallium, a raw material for producing various chemical compounds, including gallium arsenide, gallium nitride, gallium chloride and others.

Gallium-based compounds are used for manufacturing integrated circuits for fiber-optic communication and cellular telephony, LEDs, medical devices, and solar cells. RUSAL accounts for about 5% of global gallium production.
