BEMO is the first public-private integrated development project implemented jointly by RUSAL and RusHydro. The BEMO project has no analogues in terms of its characteristics and scale - it is the largest energy and metals investment project in the world.
The BEMO project includes the Boguchansky aluminium smelter with a capacity of almost 600 thousand tonnes of primary aluminium per year (total capacity of the 1st and 2nd series of the smelter) and the Boguchansky hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 3000 MW.
The project was implemented in record time - the first hydroelectric units of Boguchanskaya HPP were launched in 2012 - 6 years after the agreement was signed.
The Boguchansky aluminium smelter, part of the BEMO, is one of the most modern smelters in Russia. The first series of the plant was officially launched in March 2019.
In terms of its design capacity, the Boguchansky Aluminium Smelter ranks third in Russia after the Krasnoyarsk and Bratsk smelters - BoAZ is capable of producing almost 600,000 tonnes of aluminium per year. Its production complex consists of two series. The first series has a capacity of 298 thousand tonnes of aluminium per year.
Aluminium production at Boguchansk Aluminium Smelter is based on the world's most widespread electrolysis technology using pre-baked anodes. After completion of construction, 672 RA-300B grade electrolysers with a capacity of 2.4 tonnes of aluminium per day each will be installed in the plant's production shops.
Production at the Boguchansky aluminium smelter meets the latest international environmental requirements for aluminium production and is certified to ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management system. The construction project of the Boguchansky smelter was developed in line with RUSAL's environmental, health and safety policy, which is based on an integrated approach to emission reduction covering the entire aluminium production process chain.
As part of the project, RUSAL made significant investments in infrastructure development: a district of modern and comfortable apartment buildings was built for the employees of the smelter in Tayozhny settlement.
