The construction of the Khakas Aluminium Smelter was the first major industrial project implemented in modern Russia. IThe smelter was launched in 2006 and has become the most modern and one of the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly aluminium smelters in the world.
The project was fully implemented by Russian engineering team, using the most advanced technologies. The equipment - 336 RA-300 electrolysers - was developed by RUSAL's own engineering and technological centre as well.
The plant's structure includes an electrolysis, anodic and foundry shops, infrastructure and power supply facilities. One of the distinguishing features of the plant is its high level of automation of production processes.
RUSAL invested USD 750 million in the construction of the new smelter, with the smelter's capacity of 300 thousand tonnes of aluminium per year. The construction was carried out in record time, with only 25 months from the start of the design work to the completion of the first stage. And this is the first facility of such scale in the Russian aluminium industry, built in the last 20 years.
