RUSAL increases the share of recycled content in foundry alloys for the automotive industry to 30%

Moscow, 9 November 2023 – RUSAL, one of the world's largest aluminium producers, announces the production of cast alloy with addition of aluminium scrap, the share of recycled content in which has been increased to 25-30%. This alloy is intended for RUSAL customers in the automotive industry.

The equivalent of RUSAL’s primary equivalent foundry alloys (PEFA) consists of more than a quarter of recycled aluminium, which is added to the molten metal during the production process. Since the beginning of 2023, the production volumes of these alloys have been increased, and the content of secondary raw materials has increased from the initial 20% to 25%-30%. The new product is in full alignment with OEM requirements meeting both the need for low-carbon footprint, and recycled content. Selective approach to scrap sourcing provides comparable performance of PEFA compared to primary foundry alloys. It satisfies the strategic requirements associated with carbon neutrality commitments and will strengthen the active role of RUSAL, as well as its partners and customers in the circular economy.

"RUSAL offers a wide range of low carbon foundry alloys to the largest companies, including exclusive patented alloys. More than a hundred RUSAL’s customers, including industry leaders in the production of automotive components around the world, also receive RUSAL's exceptional technical support services for their own production. Qualifications of PEFA are ongoing with five global automotive parts suppliers," commented Global Sales and Marketing Director of RUSAL Roman Andryushin. "By introducing end of life scrap into production of foundry alloys, RUSAL creates new opportunities for companies to strengthen their potential in a low-carbon circular economy, which is based on an adaptive, safe and inclusive value chain, as well as advanced technological solutions."

This approach is in line with RUSAL's Climate Strategy, approved earlier this year, defining the Company's commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. RUSAL, as one of the world leaders in aluminium production, also retains a leading position in the automotive industry.
