Norwegian audit company Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has certified that UC RUSAL’s health and safety management system complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Series (OHSAS) Specification 18001.  The certification is the final stage in establishing an integrated management system in UC RUSAL’s Aluminium Division, which complies with ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 standards. The system is already in place at the Bratsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novokuznetsk, Sayanogorsk, and Khakas aluminium smelters and will be introduced at other plants within the division in the near future.  

The first stage of the certification programme resulted in the Aluminium Division receiving the ISO 9001 certificate of management system quality. The Krasnoyarsk, Sayanogorsk, and Novokuznetsk aluminium smelters supplying the automotive industry were also then granted ISO/TS 16949 certificate for technical specification compliance. In August 2007, the Aluminium Division was attested to comply with the ISO 14001 environmental management system. 

The certificates confirm that each stage of the production process of the Aluminium Division at UC RUSAL is guided by the principles of identification, assessment and prevention of quality, environment, health and safety risks. The integrated management system enables the Aluminium Division to set unified quality, environment, health and safety protection requirements for all units and streamline management process across the division.

It also helps to preserve the environment for both current and future generations, contributing to the realisation of the “Paving The Way To A Safer World” initiative adopted by UC RUSAL in May 2007.”

Occupational Health and Safety Series (OHSAS) specification 18001 is a standard of occupational health and safety management systems, which is part of the general management system.  These international standards comply with the world’s best practices in occupational health and safety management systems.  The system is geared towards proper management of occupational health and safety risks and further improvement of management efficiency.  The OHSAS 18001 certificate confirms that the company’s health and safety management system complies with the industry’s best practices and identifies the company as a reliable partner.
