Oleg Deripaska spoke to the audience of 3,000 to launch UC RUSAL President’s Forum at HKUST

The lecture was attended by about 500 participants. 2,500 more attendants from Russia, Hong Kong, USA, UK, and China viewed the real-time webcast of the lecture. Prior to the lecture Oleg Deripaska had received over 400 questions. The lecture at HKUST was attended by the Hon. Ronald Arculli, Managing Partner of Ronald Arculli & Associates, Independent Non-executive Chairman of Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Prof., the Hon. K C Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau, Mr. Sergey N. Gritsay, Head of General Consulate of the Russian Federation in the Hong Kong SAR, PRC.

In his lecture, Oleg Deripaska spoke about entrepreneurship and revolutionary ideas, which always enable to be one step ahead of competition and create solutions that fundamentally change future perspectives.

‘We have no chance to avoid nuclear energy, it’s the only ‘green’ energy source that is able to satisfy the global ever-growing demand for substantial, cheap and affordable energy source’, Mr. Deripaska stressed. ‘We should stop dreaming about preserving the nature and start doing something to actually protect it today. But unless we do not deliver technical, practical solution for all the growing markets, for the people who want to enjoy a better quality of life, comparable to the one in developed economies, all the talks about global sustainable development will simply remain talks’, he told the audience.

Elaborating on his recipe for success, Mr. Deripaska said: ‘During my university years and even now I’m always trying to compete with myself. When I think have less knowledge on the subject or don’t know something in detail, I go until I can really understand it well. It is a must, especially if you lead the people because it is most dangerous to guide people in a wrong direction. You should also need to be patient, you need to learn that everyone is different and you need to understand people very well’.

The lecture of Mr. Deripaska is the first part of the five year cooperation programme between RUSAL and HKUST. The UC RUSAL President’s Forum will host lectures of internationally acclaimed political leaders, businessmen, professors and scientists. Student exchanges between HKUST and leading Russian universities also form an integral part of cooperation programme. Another important project within the cooperation framework is joint research on the application of innovative technologies to the aluminium sector and a search for innovative solutions to expand the use of aluminium in construction.

The text of the lecture and the post-lecture Q&A session will be published at http://www.rusal.ru on 22 of September.
