RUSAL announces the launch of construction of a modern alumina production facility
St. Petersburg, 16 June 2023 - RUSAL, a leading global aluminium producer, announced the launch of construction of a modern alumina production facility.
The new strategic long-term investment project comprises the implementation of a set of measures aimed at developing infrastructure and alumina production within the Leningrad region.
RUSAL plans to invest around 400 billion rubles in the construction of four technological lines for alumina production, as well as in port infrastructure in Ust-Luga. Phase one of the production with a capacity of up to 2.4 million tons per year is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2028. The construction of phase two with a similar capacity is to be completed in 2032. The implementation of this project is expected to create up to 7.5 thousand new jobs in the region, as well as a cutting-edge urban environment to accommodate all those involved in production and their families.
"This project for us is much more than what is written on paper today: along with the massive modernization of the transport infrastructure of the region, we have also planned large-scale investments in the Republic of Guinea. The development of the infrastructure in Guinea is necessary to ensure an increase in the extraction and transportation of bauxite in the republic, which will also create prerequisites for improving trade and economic relations between our countries," underlined the General Director of RUSAL Evgenii Nikitin.

RUSAL is switching its aluminum production to eco-friendly petroleum pitch for the first time in the industry's history
Moscow, March 20, 2025 - RUSAL, one of the world's largest aluminum producers, is for the first time in the industry's history switching its aluminum production to anodes using environmentally friendly petroleum pitch on a commercial scale. Coal tar pitch is traditionally used in anodes during electrolysis all over the world; the industrial use of petroleum pitch, which significantly reduces the emission of harmful substances, was previously considered impossible. RUSAL has invested about 100 million rubles in scientific research and development of petroleum pitch.

RUSAL Launches Production of Rare-Earth Metal Scandium
Moscow, 27 February 2025 – RUSAL, one of the world's largest aluminium producers, is setting up a pilot production facility for scandium oxide with an annual capacity of 1.5 tonnes. Scandium is a valuable rare earth metal, and RUSAL was the first in the world to develop and implement aluminium-scandium alloys. These alloys are used in the production of ultra-lightweight components for civil shipbuilding, railway car manufacturing, and 3D printing of high-tech prosthetics. The total global production of scandium oxide is estimated at 20-25 tonnes per year.

RUSAL Integrates Its Smelters into Aluminium Recycling Program
Moscow, 17 February 2025 – RUSAL, one of the world's largest aluminium producers, has integrated four of its Russian smelters into a programme focused on processing and incorporating aluminium scrap into primary metal production. The Volgograd Aluminium Smelter — the pioneer and leader of this initiative — increased its recycling volume by 74%. The use of scrap helps reduce the carbon footprint of both the metal and its end products, while highlighting one of aluminium’s strategic advantages — the ability to be infinitely recycled without any loss of quality.
