RUSAL develops production of advanced technology materials on existing production facilities

Moscow, 1 March 2023 – RUSAL, a leading global aluminium producer, developed and launched the production of raw materials for catalysts at the Achinsk Alumina Refinery (RUSAL Achinsk) in addition to the production of VOGA fire retardants.

Production capacity of the site is 5,000 tonnes of product per year. Investments in the project exceed RUB 800 million.

The production of powder products of various purpose on the same equipment is based on a unique technology developed by RUSAL Engineering and Technology Centre (RUSAL ETC) specialists. The technology passed all necessary tests and proved claimed specifications. In addition, this production is environmentally friendly.

VOGA fire retardant is a white powder with a particle size of approximately 2 microns. Due to its physical and chemical properties, the material when heated emits moisture and extinguishes fire, suppressing the emission of toxic smoke. It is used in the production of non-flammable cable insulation for general purposes, and also for the nuclear, shipbuilding, aviation and automotive industries, in the production of paint products and high-quality paper.

Catalysts from the new aluminium hydrate are essential for the petrochemical and oil refining industries. It is a necessary element in the production of artificial rubber for car tires. Previously, such a product was not produced in Russia and was imported from Europe.

The world consumption of aluminium hydrate, similar to VOGA, is growing annually by 4–5% and today exceeds 800,000 tonnes per year. Until now, this material have been completely imported. The industrial production of VOGA and catalysts at RUSAL Achinsk will enable the Company not only to supply products to Russian consumers, but also to compete in the international market.

The construction of a new industrial site at RUSAL Achinsk was completed in two years. The launch of the VOGA and raw materials for catalysts production at the Achinsk Alumina Refinery created 50 additional jobs. The smelter reached its design capacity in 2022.
